The 4-Inch Nail in My Arm-Sized Prawn: A Kalimantan Lunch I’ll Never Forget

The Set-Up & The Journey & the Prawn menu with metal Nail.

The Journey was from Kuching to Lundu / Biawak CIQ. It was a long journey to Singkawang, as there was no good road at that time, unlike today. The road was muddy, narrow and slippery.

We were transported by three 10 or 12-seater vehicles plus one Hilux.

Passing through several Indonesian kampungs, we stopped by a roadside restaurant somewhere in the Sambas area. That was where we ordered our food, one of which was the Udang menu.

There were several menus and I took the prawn, more or less as big as my forearm. When I bite it, I feel a very hard, extra-hard object. Luckily, I did not break my teeth. Upon checking what I was biting, I found that it was a Metal nail, a square nail, roughly 4 inches in length.

I did not complain or make much fuss about it, but I did comment to the workers there, ..they can’t say much also as they are the workers. They were apologetic and just shook their head. Sure thing, we know scammers are everywhere. Most of the time, you can escape it, but you may get it if it is too frequent or at the wrong place and time.

Just wondering why there was such a nail inside the fried prawn? This is just the theory. There are several theories we can come up with on this thing..Perhaps the fisherman stuffed the nail in a random prawn to improve the weight of his prawn. ..or the wholesale stuffed the nail randomly with a similar objective, or the restaurant did it.

Just wonder, how others would react in that situation …? found a large metal nail inside the prawn or their fish menu.

So, for travellers, be careful of what you eat, especially at the shoddy restaurant.

I wrote this to remind myself to take my food with extra caution whenever I travel, especially to other countries.

Some of our members were waiting for the food.
